Meet Hannah Briggs
NJAND July Student of the Month

“Each day I am motivated by the chance to grow into a better version of myself. I view every challenge as an opportunity to learn, improve, and build skills to make a difference in people’s lives. The idea that what I do today can help me be someone who supports and uplifts other in the future keeps me going.”

Current Role: Master’s degree student and Dietetic Intern at the Rutgers University MS/DI program

A day in the life:
As a Master’s level student & DI intern Hannah’s days are a balance of academic work, extracurricular activities and working as an assistant manager at a restaurant.  She attends lectures, works on projects and serves as a student nutritionist for the Rutgers Healthy Dining Team.

Self-Reflection – Motivation and Inspiration

Hannah is passionate about nutrition. She was inspired to pursue a career in nutrition and dietetics after attending a presentation by an RD to her ballet class.  The RD spoke about food and how proper nutrition supports strength, energy, and well-being – all very important for a dancer. It’s a credit to Hannah’s dedication and character that she would want to pay it forward and help people understand how to care for their bodies in a healthy, balanced way as her career.

For Hannah, the biological, psychological and cultural depth and breadth of nutrition is exciting! During the semester she stays inspired by reflecting on her accomplishments. In challenging times, she stays grounded by focusing on progress she has made through perseverance and growth.

Being a nutrition student has taught Hannah to be kinder to herself in regards to health and wellness. “In a world where social media focuses on picture perfect moments, it can be hard not to compare myself to others”. Studying nutrition has been a growth opportunity, helping her learn that doing her best is what truly matters. She has learned that she doesn’t have to be picture perfect: “I honor my body by making choices that support my well-being in a way that is right for me.”

Community at the Core:

Community is a pillar of Hannah’s experience. One of the things that she most appreciates about studying nutrition is the strong sense of community that comes with it. Her connections with friends, classmates, and professionals who share her passion for nutrition makes her journey even more meaningful. The professional community includes mentors that have influenced Hannah personally and professionally. She credits Dr. Peggy Policastro, Alison Brown, MS, RD and Marina Vineis, MS, RD with providing her invaluable opportunities to expand her knowledge and skills – shaping her into a better person and practitioner.  “Their unwavering guidance and support have made a lasting impact on my personal growth and career development.”

Her family helps her keep going during challenging times.  Hannah’s mother and aunt remind her that “Nothing worth having comes easy”.

Just for Fun:

Hannah is a proud New Jersey native. She enjoys the beaches, food, variety of shopping, access to two major cities and the great people! In her free time Hannah enjoys spending time with her friends and family, discovering new shows to watch, thrift shopping, cooking and trying new foods.
