Awards

The NJAND honors NJ affiliate members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics through the awards program. Please consider nominating a colleague, mentor, or yourself for one of these prestigious awards.  Program faculty throughout the state are encouraged to nominate students for the Outstanding Dietetics Student Awards.  Students in a supervised practice program (Dietetic Internship or Dietetic Technician) are encouraged to self-nominate for the Student Initiative Award. All nominees must be members of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to be considered. Honorees receive complimentary admission to our annual meeting and are recognized at the business and awards session of the meeting. Award Winners History (updated 2023)

Award Description and Information

Outstanding Dietetics Student Award:  The purpose of the Outstanding Dietetics Student Award program is to recognize the emerging leadership and achievement of students in ACEND-accredited dietetics education programs and encourage their participation in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Each state is allowed to recognize one student from each type of dietetics education program (Didactic Program in Dietetics, Dietetic Internship, Coordinated Program, Dietetic Technician Program, Future Education Model, and International/Foreign Dietitian Education) with a maximum of six per state. In addition to publishing the list of outstanding students in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, each awardee will receive a congratulatory letter and certificate signed by the president of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year:  The purpose of the Recognized Young Dietitian of the Year program is to recognize the competence and activities of younger dietitians in the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and to encourage their continued participation in Academy affairs. This group will be an additional resource from which the leadership of the Academy will develop at the district, state and national levels. In addition to publishing the list of RYDY’s in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, each awardee will receive a formal certificate of recognition signed by the president of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Recognized Dietetic Technician of the Year:  The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes the professional contributions of dietetic technicians and encourages their continued participation in the community and Academy activities. Award recipients are selected by their affiliated dietetic organization. They demonstrate leadership qualities and performance in the Academy or their employment through education, clinical nutrition, foodservice management, public relations, career guidance and legislation. Emerging Dietetics Leader Award: This award was established by the 1996 Board of Directors of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. The Emerging Dietetics Leader Award recognizes the competence and activities of members, regardless of their age, who are at the beginning of their dietetics careers. Members who receive this honor support the promotion of optimal health and nutritional status of the public through demonstrating leadership in legislation, research, education, management and other areas related to the profession. Carolyn Sebastianelli Distinguished Member Award: This award honors an NJAND member who has been a role model, demonstrating commitment to the nutritional needs of the community, leadership, mentoring, service to others, and professionalism and high ethical standards in practice. Student Initiative Award: This award is self-nominated for students enrolled in a supervised practice program (dietetic internship or accredited dietetic technician program) in New Jersey. It requires an essay addressing professional goals and how involvement in dietetic associations will assist in achievement of those goals. Outstanding Dietetic Educator Award:  The purpose of the Outstanding Dietetic Educator Award is to recognize the teaching, mentoring and leadership activities of faculty and preceptors in ACEND accredited dietetics education programs. One educator or preceptor can be selected from each of four program types (Didactic Program in Dietetics, Dietetic Internship, Coordinated Program, and Dietetic Technician Program) from our geographic area. This award is handled by the Nutrition and Dietetic Educators and Preceptors Dietetic Practice Group.
